Trust model in Great Place to Work for Sri Lankan Apparel Industry

 

Introduction

Most people believe that a great workplace should comprise incredible benefits and fancy people in the workplace (De Guzman & Teng-Calleja, 2018). However, a great workplace extends beyond those aspects and a great workplace is largely grounded on the level of trust that individuals experience in the workplace from their employers, level of arrogance with employees’ jobs, and the level of enjoyment with peers at the workplace (Lowe, 2019). However, ensuring trust, employment pride and co-worker relationships are challengeable situations concerning for most organizations including the apparel industry. Great place to work; Trust model contributes to identifying the characteristics of a great workplace (Burchell & Robin, 2011).

Trust Model in Great Place to Work

This model emphasizes that trust is the most important factor for having a great place to work for individuals. According to the model (Figure 1), employee is placed at the center from managers, co-workers and job. This model helps to assess level of trust, pride and companionship within the workplace. The trust between employer and employees are grounded on credibility, fairness and respect (The globe and mail, 2019).

Trust Model for Sri Lankan Apparel Industry

 

The apparel industry in Sri Lanka is a large labor incentive industry and confronting several issues with its workforce. Concerning the apparel industry in Sri Lanka, it is essential to ensure a great workplace for employees (Rajapaksha, 2015).


Trust – Trust includes credibility, fairness, and respect. Credibility assures two-way communication in the workplace, managers’ competencies and a higher level of integrity. Respect refers to the managers’ aids, collaboration with employees, caring, etc. Fairness comprises workplace equality and justice (Lowe, 2019). However, most of the apparel organizations in Sri Lanka, violate employee trust with less integrity (Rajapaksha, 2015).

 

Pride- Employees should have pride in their job role, teams, and organization (The globe and mail, 2019). The apparel industry in Sri Lanka is reported as a high labor exploited industry with low pays and extended working hours. Employees are experiencing numerous grievances such as occupational stress, work-life imbalances, etc. and employee have less pride in their jobs.

  Camaraderie or friendship- It is essential to convey that employees are the greater part of larger outcomes of the organization and organizations need to ensure effective co-worker relationships within the workplace (Burchell & Robin, 2011). There is no time for camaraderie within the apparel industry in Sri Lanka as leaders always push workers to achieve extra performance (Rajapaksha, 2015).

Conclusion

Accordingly, it can be concluded that the trust model of a great place to work has a larger impact on organizations. The apparel industry in Sri Lanka is experiencing numerous issues with its workforce and the industry should practice the trust model to have a highly capable and motivated workforce.

    Since every transaction takes place based on trust it is considerably important at the workplace as well. In order to retain the employees and ensure job satisfaction with high level of motivation amongst the team at any scale and of any industry as it is in apparel industry. Organizations may fail to attract skillful youth talent to the apparel industry, and current employees may leave for a new job with a “more pride” because they may feel left behind, although it is generating billions for the country's economy and its vital part. I think it is up to organizational management to take necessary steps to make employees proud and make them feel good for what they are doing with the help of the government.You have explained one of the biggest issues in the industry in a simple and understanding way.   11. Work place is key impact to employee job satisfaction in any organization. Employee should happy to work. Work place effect to employee Absenteeism, turnover. More employee turn over and absenteeism direct impact to productivity & efficiency. Grade work place is not only important to apparel sector it is important to any of industrial organization.
